Quinceañera Planning Timeline: What to Do and When

A quinceañera has more moving parts than most celebrations: a Mass or ceremony, a formal entrance, the vals, the court, the dress, dinner and dancing.

Working backward from the date keeps it manageable. Here is a timeline families can adapt.

12 Months Out

• Set the date and a working budget
• Decide on the size and formality of the celebration
• Choose the court of honor
• Tour venues and book the one that fits — this is the first thing that fills up

9 to 10 Months Out

• Confirm the church or ceremony details if you are having a Mass
• Book the photographer and videographer
• Start dress shopping — formal gowns often need months for ordering and alterations
• Choose your padrinos and madrinas

6 to 8 Months Out

• Book catering, DJ or band, and cake
• Choose the choreographer and start planning the vals
• Order court attire
• Plan décor and colors
• Reserve rooms or lodging for out-of-town family

4 to 5 Months Out

• Send invitations
• Begin choreography rehearsals with the full court
• Finalize the menu
• Order the surprise dance outfits, if you are doing one
• Confirm hair and makeup

2 to 3 Months Out

• Dress fittings
• Build the full run-of-show: arrival, entrance, ceremony moments, dinner, vals, surprise dance, open dancing
• Confirm every vendor's arrival time and setup needs
• Walk the venue again with your timeline in hand

1 Month Out

• Final headcount to the caterer
• Final payments
• Rehearse the entrance and vals at the venue if possible
• Confirm transportation and photo locations
• Print or share the timeline with the court and family

The Week Of

• Final fitting and steaming
• Pack an emergency kit: safety pins, tape, comfortable shoes, snacks
• Deliver décor and gifts to the venue
• Confirm arrival times with everyone in the entrance

Photo time. Formal photos with the court take longer than anyone expects. Build a real block into the timeline, ideally in good light before the reception starts.
